‘How did the interview with Tracey Birch go?’ O’Brian nabbed him as soon as he entered the squad room. Several interested faces looked in his direction.

‘I did learn something which may be helpful. I intend to talk to James Wylie again. I suspect he may be the J.W. entered in Gina Roberts salon records.’

‘That scrawny toe-rag?’ O’Brian sounded surprised. ‘Surely he wouldn’t have been a client of hers?’

‘Not a salon client per se, but possibly a different sort of client. It looks like a definite link to drugs in this case.’

‘For sure.’ He still looked puzzled. ‘But why enter his initials and phone number amongst her salon clients?’

Ian frowned. ‘It’s obvious surely. To throw anyone off the scent who might investigate those records.’

O’Brian reddened. His face wore a sullen look.

‘There was never any joy from that cellphone number was there?’

He shook his head in response to Ian’s question.

Ian rubbed his hands together and looked around the room. ‘Right. Has anyone got anything useful to report on the case?’

Nobody volunteered, so he turned to O’Brian and gestured to him to follow him upstairs.

‘I haven’t asked you. How did it go at Court?’

‘The bastards are still denying the drugs belonged to them. Reckoned the police planted the evidence and their lawyer did his level best to convince the judge of this, but luckily their fingerprints told the story, and he wasn’t swayed. This is why they’re still in our custody awaiting trial.’

‘Good.’ Ian reached his office and flung open the door. ‘We need to get more information out of them. They’re only the tip of the iceberg. We want the big guys and they’ll be the ones to spill eventually.’
